Smart home and IoT

Smart home & IoT

The same engine that runs a hardware-verified real-time control loop also runs your house. A presence sensor, a lamp, a heat pump and a servo drive can live in one program — and the house gets the industrial half: determinism, a historian, alarms and a UI you own.

Status Core shipped

In one line

Melanite connects to smart-home and IoT devices over MQTT (Shelly, Tasmota, Zigbee2MQTT, ESP32 and anything else that publishes), WLED for addressable LED strips, and Modbus TCP for inverters, meters and HVAC — each exposed as a device with named values alongside industrial I/O. Existing Home Assistant Modbus configs import directly, and the MQTT topic convention deliberately matches Home Assistant's discovery convention. On top of that the same box gives you synchronized multi-room audio and spoken announcements, occupancy tracking from real sensors, and sun and moon position for circadian lighting. Matter is on the roadmap and is not shipped.

Capabilities

MQTT as the on-ramp

An embedded broker plus MQTT as a full device protocol. A Shelly, a Tasmota plug, a Zigbee2MQTT sensor or your own ESP32 becomes a device with named values, HMI bindings, trend charts and logging.

WLED, properly

Addressable strips driven directly from logic — solid colour or full spatial per-pixel rendering — and a one-tap flow that turns a blank ESP32 into a configured, adopted light.

Home Assistant, side by side

Melanite can stand alone or sit alongside Home Assistant over MQTT. Existing Modbus YAML configs import straight in, and the topic conventions match, so nothing has to be re-learned.

Modbus for the serious gear

PV inverters, energy meters, heat pumps and ventilation units — read and write, verified against real hardware.

Audio in every room

Synchronized multi-room playback, Spotify Connect, doorbell and alarm announcements spoken aloud, and an intercom — from the same device, not a second ecosystem.

Sun, moon and time

Sun and moon position with scene-ready direction outputs, sunrise and sunset, daily windows and IEC timers — for blinds, circadian light and irrigation that follow the sky rather than a fixed clock.

On the roadmap

Matter (Hue, IKEA, Nanoleaf, Apple and Google ecosystems) via a bridge, and calendar-driven automation. Designed, not shipped.

Worked examples

How

The inverter and meter are Modbus devices (or a Home Assistant YAML you import); the logic is a graph; the historian records it; and the dashboard is your own HTML at /device. No vendor portal, no subscription, no internet connection required.

Why Melanite

Home Assistant is an excellent hub, built for the home: it has no deterministic real-time control and no EtherCAT. Melanite treats your house and your machine as the same problem — and because it runs offline with no account and no phone-home, the house keeps working when the internet doesn't.

FAQ

Does Melanite replace Home Assistant?

It can stand alone or sit alongside Home Assistant over MQTT. Melanite adds deterministic real-time control, industrial protocols, a branded operator UI and a built-in historian that a home hub doesn't have. Existing Home Assistant Modbus configs import directly.

Does it support Matter?

Not yet. Matter is designed and on the roadmap via a bridge, but it is not implemented and we don't list it as a supported protocol. Today the routes in are MQTT, WLED and Modbus TCP.

Does it need the internet or a cloud account?

No. Everything runs on the device, including the MQTT broker, the historian and licence verification. There is no account, no cloud service and no phone-home.
